No-Mess Cage Feeder

A clear seed hopper that bolts to the bars of a cage and refills its own tray. Seed drops down behind a curved inner wall as the bird eats, so the tray is never empty and the bird cannot stand in the food and throw it around.

If you are sweeping seed off the floor every day, this is the fix. The tray sits low and enclosed, and the hood over it stops the usual flicking.

Who it suits

Budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, canaries and finches. For a larger parrot the tray is on the small side and a strong beak will work at the lid.

Settling a bird into it

Leave the old dish in the cage for the first few days alongside this one. Birds are suspicious of a new feeder and some will not touch it until they have watched it for a while. Once they are eating from the tray, take the old dish out.

Cleaning

Slide the tray out, tip the husks, wipe it dry. Once a week take the whole thing off and rinse it — seed dust settles in the corner behind the baffle.
