The bath is the part people underestimate

A seed feeder only ever brings you seed-eaters. Warblers, thrushes, waxwings, orioles and vireos eat insects and fruit and will never touch a feeder — but every bird drinks, and every bird bathes. Put water out and the list of species in your yard roughly doubles.

It also works year-round, which a seed feeder arguably does not. Summer is when a bath earns its keep.

How to set it up

Put the bath somewhere open, with a shrub eight or ten feet away — birds want an escape route but will not use water they cannot approach safely. Hang the gazebo and tube feeders apart from each other so birds are not queuing. The suet cage goes near a tree trunk if you have one; woodpeckers and nuthatches prefer feeding close to bark. The window feeder goes wherever you actually sit.

What to buy with it

A bag of black oil sunflower seed and a box of fat balls. The bath just needs a hose and a scrub every few days in warm weather.
